Inside the Experience
Nestled in the heart of Colonia Condesa, Matisse is a culinary refuge that blends historic charm with modern Mexican flavors. Housed in a quaint two-story building dating back to the early 1900s, the restaurant offers multiple intimate dining spaces, including a serene courtyard with a delicate waterfall, creating an ambiance that immediately soothes the senses. This setting alone invites guests to slow down and savor their experience.
The menu at Matisse reflects authentic, well-crafted dishes that resonate with local tradition while appealing to a broad palate. Highlights include the beautifully balanced enfrijoladas, which deliver a comforting depth of flavor, and the iconic "concha Matisse" — a sweet bread that even won over the pickiest of young eaters. Breakfast here is particularly noteworthy, featuring fresh, vibrant ingredients prepared with care, and a touch of warmth that makes it feel like home.
The beverage offerings should not be overlooked—especially their hot chocolate made with almond milk and a dusting of cinnamon, praised as one of the best in Mexico City. This rich, velvety treat strikes the perfect harmony between indulgence and subtlety, a testament to the kitchen’s skill and attention to detail.
Matisse also boasts an impressive bakery that tempts visitors with a variety of delicacies, from strawberry cake to buttery pastries, each promising a taste of true craftsmanship. The professional and friendly staff add to the overall welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that every visit feels personal and attentive.
While some may find the pricing a bit on the higher side, the generous portions, quality ingredients, and the overall unique experience justify the investment. Whether you are looking for a peaceful morning meal, a cozy afternoon retreat, or a casual dinner in an art-filled setting, Matisse stands as a hidden gem in the bustling neighborhood near Parque México.
In essence, Matisse delivers more than just food; it offers a tasteful journey into Mexico City’s culinary artistry, framed by an enchanting environment that keeps you coming back.
“ Found this hidden gem on Google on a rainy day looking for Hot chocolate drink. Was not busy late evening. We ordered hot chocolate with almond milk and some cinnamon on the top. It was one of the best hot chocolate I have had in Cdmx. The place is beautiful too, it has a bakery in the front with amazing delicacies. We did not try any of those , probably the next time we are here. Surely will visit soon ! ”
“ Friendly staff, and good food: our toddler is going through a picky phase, and even he loved the 'concha Matisse' (sweat bread) and scrambled eggs with jam. Enfrijoladas were also good. ”

“ This place was amazing to look at very unique and full of amazing art and architecture! The food was not bad, but not too flavourful (this could of been due to not a large variety) the strawberry cake was good though! The service was great otherwise. ”
